Propane: The Cleaner, Greener Fuel

Posted: August 31, 2018
If you’re already using it to power many of appliances in your North Carolina home, you know why propane is one of the most versatile fuels around. But did you know it’s one of the most eco-friendly ways to power your home, too?
Here are three big reasons why using propane benefits the environment.
- It reduces emissions – Propane emits less than half the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity to produce the same amount of energy – primarily because coal-fired plants produce more than 40 percent of the electricity used in the U.S. Propane has a lower carbon content than any fossil fuel, including fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol – a big part of the reason it was added to the Clean Air Act as a clean fuel in 1990. Propane is also a great fuel option for green homebuilders and developers: in fact, using propane can earn your project points toward LEED certification.
- It improves efficiency – Propane-powered appliances are typically much more efficient than electric models of similar size and output. A tankless propane water heater, for example, can save up to 50 percent on energy costs compared to electric systems, according to the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). Less energy used equals less environmental impact.
- It is harmless to soil and water – Propane is not toxic and does not spill, pool, or leave a residue, which makes it harmless to soil or water in the event of a tank leak (contrast that with heating oil, one gallon of which can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water). With propane, there are no risks for long-term damage to your home or property if a leak occurs – unlike with heating oil, which can require costly remediation.
If you’re looking for an efficient fuel that minimizes your environmental impact and keeps your family safe, warm, and comfortable all year long, propane is a great choice – and if you need a reliable propane supplier anywhere in our service area, Parker Gas is the choice.
