As we spend more time at home this coming winter, it is more essential than ever that your furnace be up for the job of keeping your home and everyone in it warm and comfortable.

Now is the time to make sure that it is with some easy tasks.

Get Your Furnace A Tune-up

A tune-up of your furnace by a trained, experienced service technician make sure your furnace is running properly and at its best possible efficiency. The technician also has the opportunity to carefully inspect your furnace and do any needed repairs before problems become breakdowns.

Check Your Ductwork

Your HVAC system’s ductwork should be serviced and cleaned every three to five years. If someone in your home has allergies, or a respiratory condition like asthma or COPD, it needs to be done more frequently. Also, a service of your ductwork lets your ductwork technicians find and fix leaks that lead to reduced efficiency and higher energy bills.

Check The Vents

This is a good time to vacuum and clean the vents, so they operate efficiently and don’t blow dust and other allergens around a room. Also, make sure vents aren’t blocked by things like furniture and curtains so the air can circulate more easily.

Clean The Area Around The Furnace

If the utility room or basement has been a storage area over the warmer weather, make sure your furnace has a clear space around it before you turn it on. There should be at least three feet of clear space around your furnace. This is also a good time to vacuum the outside surface of the furnace to remove dust and cobwebs.

Replace The Filter

A clean filter helps your system run at its best efficiency. Your air filter should be changed at the very least once every three months. Check it monthly and change as needed. If you have pets or someone in your home has a respiratory condition, it will need to be changed every month.

Get Your Thermostat Ready

Make sure your thermostat is operating properly and that you have it set to the best temperatures for energy efficiency. This is what the U.S. Department of Energy recommends:

Now is a perfect time to upgrade to a programmable or a smart thermostat, which uses wireless
technology to allow you to check and program your thermostat anywhere you get a wireless or cellular signal. Both can help lower your energy costs. Some smart thermostats can even let you know if your furnace needs service!
