Is Propane a “Cleaner” Fuel?

Shrink your carbon footprint with propane!

eco-friendly home heat north carolinaPropane is a cleaner-burning fuel than electricity since it gives off virtually no emissions and is not a greenhouse gas. Propane has been classified as an alternative fuel under both the 1990 Clean Air Act and the 1992 National Energy Policy.

In the United States, coal-fired power generators generate about 60% of the electricity. Electricity generation contributes to over a quarter of US annual greenhouse gases. Only transportation creates more climate-altering pollution.

The propane sector is working to make propane even more environmentally friendly. Renewable propane, which is molecularly identical to propane, is one way it’s attempting to achieve that goal. Renewable propane is made from sustainable resources like animal oils, plant oils, biomass, and other triglycerides.

Reducing energy usage with clean-burning propane also helps reduce your environmental impact. Propane’s versatility allows you to do that in many ways around your home, including water heaters that heat more water faster than comparable electric models at a 30% lower cost, heating systems that are more efficient and comfortable than electric ones, and clothes dryers that get your laundry done 25% faster than electric models.

Adding comfort and efficiency to your home is one way propane is cleaner than other energy sources. Here are some others.

Autogas

Propane autogas is a considerably cleaner form of energy than gasoline or diesel. This results in a significant reduction in vehicle greenhouse emissions.Autogas exhaust has up to 70% fewer smog-causing hydrocarbons than gasoline or diesel. Propane produces 12% less carbon dioxide, about 20% less nitrogen oxide, and up to 60% lesser carbon monoxide than gasoline.  School buses run on autogas can reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions by 96% compared with school buses run on diesel.

Commercial propane

Propane helps businesses of all kinds become more environmentally friendly. Propane forklifts emit much fewer greenhouse gases than gasoline-powered forklifts. There is also no environmental damage done in the rare event of a propane leak, something that can’t be said about gasoline forklifts. Clean burning propane also helps farms reduce emissions from equipment, water heaters, greenhouse and barn heaters, crop dryers, orchard heaters, and more. Landscapers also reduce emissions with propane commercial mowers and other propane-powered equipment.
