Safety, Savings and Comfort with Propane

Safety, Savings and Comfort with Propane

Being safe, saving money and staying comfortable becomes a lot easier when you rely on propane — and us! To help you achieve these objectives this season, we offer some advice.

Shelter from the storm

Our service team has put together these suggestions to help your family stay safe during severe weather this season.

Shelter from the storm

Feel free to call us so we can inspect your equipment and make sure it’s running safely and efficiently. We care about your comfort and safety!

Use your generator safely

With more people relying on both portable and permanent generators than ever before, our team also wanted to share these safety tips.

How do new water heater standards affect you?

New water heating standards from the U.S. Department of Energy went into effect in 2015. Under the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act, all new storage tank water heaters—regardless of fuel source—must meet a higher efficiency rating.

Manufacturers say those increases in energy efficiency can be achieved in many cases by using more insulation. However, this will make the storage tank units a few inches taller and wider—while also increasing their cost. Depending on the model and tank capacity, new tank water heaters may be as much as three times more expensive as older ones.

That increased size will also have a big effect on homes with space constraints; a small propane gas tankless unit that hangs on the wall will be an easier fit than new, bigger tanks.

These regulatory changes are also expected to close the upfront cost gap between propane tankless units and electric storage tank heaters. Propane tankless units may even end up having a price advantage!

If you’re thinking about replacing your water heater soon, we recommend exploring your options in tankless water heaters. (See related article below.)

How Much Do You Know About Propane?

How much do you know

You may know that propane is a smart and efficient alternative to electricity for powering a wide range of equipment all around your home. Here are five things you may not know:

  1. When combined with air, the source of ignition for propane must be at least 940° — twice as hot as what is required to ignite gasoline.
  2. Propane Autogas is a safe and cost-effective motor fuel; it’s used for buses, fleet trucks, forklifts, tractors and lawn mowers.
  3. Propane-fueled hybrid heat pumps can be used to keep your home warmer when temperatures drop below freezing.
  4. Nontoxic propane poses no threat to soil and water; that’s why installing propane tanks (above- or below ground) is not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
  5. Propane is an essential fuel for many farms in North Carolina. It’s used for irrigation pumps, crop drying, fruit ripening, space and water heating, generators and refrigeration. We are proud to support our farming communities with reliable deliveries of propane!

Snapshot

George Lucas

If you want to talk with a propane expert, look no further than George Lucas, who has been “living and breathing” propane for some 30 years now.

His extensive experience makes him one of our go-to technicians.

“I do just about everything, from installing gas ranges and appliances to fireplace log sets and, of course, repairs,” says George. “Pretty much anything that comes up, I can handle.”

George says his job never gets dull.

“I really like the variety, meeting different people, helping them out, but especially not being in one place all day,” he says.

Away from work, George enjoys an occasional hunting trip, but his main focus is spending time with his grandchildren — something that never gets dull, either!
